Free workspace for artists in the Brussels community centres during summer

Plan Atelier: Community centres open their doors to Brussels artists this summer

Are you a professional artist or do you have plans to move in that direction? Do you have a clear link to Brussels and are looking for space for your project?  This summer, the Brussels community centres are once again making some rooms available to artists free of charge. All disciplines are welcome. Artists will have a workspace at a community centre where they can develop their artistic project or research. The Flemish Community Centre VGC will help them find the most suitable space.

“Brussels is one of the world's creative hotspots. We must also literally give space to our artists in order to preserve and strengthen this position. Within our “Plan Atelier”, among other things, we make our own VGC spaces available to artists as much as possible,” said VGC college member for Culture Pascal Smet.

Last year, we provided space for 63 artists/collectives in our community centres, since summer is a time in which these centres work differently. Regular activities such as weekly courses, school activities, Dutch language courses and various activities of associations do not take place, or not as often, during the summer months. However, play weeks and a summer offer with more focus on outdoor activities are organised. Therefore, several rooms are often free during summer, which makes them available for artists.

Artists can register via the registration form (Dutch, French or English) until Sunday 14 May 2023. After 14 May, Brussels performance art association “Kunstenwerkplaats”, the VGC and the community centres will review all applications. They will make their selection and allocate the most suitable and available spaces by 9 June 2023 at the latest. As in previous years, priority will go to active artists with a clear link to Brussels. At the end of the summer Kunstenwerkplaats will invite some residents for a follow-up trajectory.
